Fit Five: Drink Water
Add a little flavor to your water.
Drink water. It seems so obvious. But if most of us were honest, we would admit that we do not drink enough water throughout the day. And, the water we do drink gets nearly nullified by dehydrating coffee, soda, or alcohol.
Some of us simply don’t prefer the taste of water, especially when we have so many other options available to us. (Most of us have a coffee maker where we work, soda machines down the hall, as well as advertisements everywhere reminding you how refreshing a Coke would be right now.)
So, let’s make water taste amazing.
We’ve come up with a few very easy ways to make the 96 ounces of water you should drink everyday as tempting as any latte or Diet Coke.
1. Lemon and Lime (Not Just for Sprite Anymore)
It is amazing what a little citrus will do for your water.
There are a few ways to get the great taste of lemon and/or lime in your daily intake.
First, you can slice up a lime or lemon in quarter-inch slices and let them soak in a pitcher of water in your fridge overnight. Then, pour in your favorite water bottle and enjoy it all day.
You may not want to spend your time slicing and you just want to add lemon or lime as you go. In that case, we recommend buying a bottle of lemon or lime juice from your favorite grocery store. Keep it in the fridge at work and/or home and give your water a bit of zest whenever you want.
2. Overnight Cucumber Water
Cucumbers have a very mellow flavor. Unlike the strong citrus flavor of lemons and limes, cucumbers will only enhance the flavor of your water, not take it over.
But, unlike lemon or limes, you can’t buy cucumber juice by the bottle.
So, before you go to bed, slice a medium-sized cucumber in quarter-inch slices and let the slices soak overnight in a pitcher of water.
The next day, you’ll have crisp, refreshing water.
3. Sweet Blueberry Water
It is natural to be drawn to sugar. At one point in human history, an integral part of survival was to find, consume, and use quick energy sugar supplies.
But, in the modern day, sugar may be too easy to find. It takes more work to avoid sugar than it does to find it.
This simple recipe makes it easy to get some natural sugar and sweetness into your day without retreating towards sodas and sugary coffee drinks.
First buy some blueberries. (During the summer, buy fresh blueberries. They are delicious and pretty inexpensive when they’re in season. When it is not blueberry season, buy frozen.)
Use one cup of blueberries for every 32 ounces of water. Soak the blueberries in a pitcher of water overnight.
The next day, you’ll be drinking plenty of water and getting the touch of sweetness you crave.
