Strong Mom: Deb Braatz
When asked what it means to her to be a strong mom, Deb Braatz shares one word.
“Faith. Being a strong mom is about having faith.”
Deb is a mother of two sons (23 and 21) and one daughter (17) and says that being strong for her family is first and foremost founded in taking time to seek truth. “I have to have that time. I need to be grounded in that truth.”
Deb says she knows many mothers, including herself, who face a constant temptation that says you can’t spend time focusing on yourself. You’re being selfish when you rest.
You’re being selfish when you train.
“I’ve felt that temptation, the temptation to feel guilty for coming here. But, I just have to remind myself of what I get when I come here to train. I’m happier when I train. I feel better. I have the energy it takes to be the best mom I can be. To be a mom, it takes being there for your family 100%. I can’t be there 100% if I don’t have energy, if I’m not taking care of my spiritual, emotional, and physical health.”
Deb is a natural helper. It is obvious in the way she encourages the others in her Squad. It is obvious in the way she asks a simple question like how are you doing? She is also willing to ask for help.
“I’m not totally confident with my physical health, to be honest. But I’m getting there. If had to give one piece of advice to other moms it would be this: Moms, be willing to ask for help! We’re expected to do everything on our own, but we don’t have to. Be willing to ask for help!”
As well as being a natural helper, Deb is also naturally humble. But, when ask about her favorite lifts, her face lights up and she says confidently, “Squats. I’m good at those. I have very strong legs.”
