Spartan: Ed Leber
Ed Leber recently sent this note to our Courthouse Spartan Facebook page.
On the one year anniversary of taking my nervous self to Spartan, I have started to think: What is fitness? I see that it’s never a place you actually reach, but a process. No one will hand you a card that says “Good job, you are fit, go home and sleep”.
I have always exercised in the get on the elliptical/lift weights/do a bit of a run sort of way. But there was always something sort of tentative, sort of safe about it. It wasn’t until I did Spartan in the Park last year that I realized there was something else. This something was the chance to push and in pushing to grow and change.
I’m starting to realize that there was an element of fear in my workouts. I was afraid to get hurt, to fail, to look weak or silly. Maybe it was afraid to change. Then I got sort tired of being the ”me” I was, and my wife suggested I give Spartan a try for a couple months.
I went and was very nervous. Luckily a friend, Jacque, was leading it that week. That helped a lot. Then I started in and well, started to learn. Now, it’s been a year of working with Sarah, Ryan, and Tyler. I feel changed inside and out.
I’m not afraid to do, to try, to fail, and really to look “weak”. I know I’m going hard, doing my best, and growing. There are times I wanted to stop, to cease being what I perceived as the weakling in the team.
But I am staying, because I feel change.
Am I where I want to be? Not Even Close. Will I ever? Who knows?
But I’m more “me” then I have ever been.
But I know now that there is more to fitness than a quick workout, it’s all in your head, your heart and your body. I have made new friends, met some AMAZING trainers and role models, and met a new me.
So, thanks Courthouse, and Jacque (Battlecreek) thanks especially to Sarah, Tyler and the Spartan trainers at the South Club. Growth is worth it.
No matter where you are or what you know about Spartan, we give everyone the chance to try it for a week for free. Be like Ed. Become changed inside and out.
